TEXT: Matthew 12:22-37:

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

——

Billy Graham said, “Those who reject Christ choose to follow Satan, and they will follow him right into his ultimate destiny, in spite of all that God has done to save them from the fiery abyss.”

In our first message we looked at the response to Jesus’ healing. We saw that while the common people asked among themselves if Jesus was the Messiah, the Pharisees accused Jesus of gaining His power through the devil. In our second message we saw how Jesus showed the absurdity of the Pharisees accusations. Jesus proved that He was of God. In our last message, we saw how Jesus showed that the kingdom of God has come.

Third, Jesus warns that there is no middle ground in this conflict. Matthew 12:30 says, “He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.” Where do you stand on Jesus Christ? Do you stand with Him, therefore believing that He is God, the Saviour sent to deliver us from hell and sin, the King of Kings, worthy of our worship and service? Or do you stand against Him, and oppose Him in order to raise up the will of humanity? Most people, when asked this question, will fall somewhere in between. They will say that they do not worship Jesus as God, but neither do they oppose Him as a threat. They may see Jesus as a good teacher, or as a prophet, or as just an ancient religious leader whose movement got lucky and became the largest religion in the world. Most people will say they are neither with Jesus or against Jesus. But in this verse, Jesus warns the people that there is neutrality in the war between the kingdom of God and the enemies of God. In every earthly war, there have been neutral nations that took no side, but not in this spiritual war. If you are not allied with Jesus, you are His enemy. If you are not one of the sheep that Jesus has gathered into His pasture, you are being scattered by the wolf that is Satan. There is no way to reconcile the will of God and the way of the world. There is no middle road between loving the Lord Jesus and setting yourself against Him. You either submit to the will of Christ or you are submitting to sin and Satan.John MacArthur said, “Jesus is saying, “I’m the King and I’ve proved it by My ability to control Satan’s dominion. And if I’m the King, then the kingdom is here.” And what does that mean? It’s available to you. Enter it. How do you enter it? By faith in Christ. And then He tells them you got to make a decision. Here He’s talking about salvation. And what He means here is very simple. There’s no neutrality. You either gather or scatter. You either say, “Jesus is of Satan,” or, “He’s of God.” And you have only those two options because you can’t deny His supernatural power. You can’t. And if you want to say He’s of Satan, then you have just said an absurdity and you’ve revealed your prejudice, because He went about doing good things and delivering people from Satan. You are prejudiced and you are absurd, and you reveal that at the bottom of it, you are rebelling against the reality of the kingdom that is here. Beloved, there is nothing you can do with Jesus Christ except to affirm that He is who He claimed to be. And there’s no middle ground. You can’t just say He’s a nice man, good teacher, moral fellow, religious leader. He is either of Satan or of God, and if you don’t want to stand with the absurd, biased, rebellious Pharisees, you’re left with the fact that He’s of God, and you can bring the whole thing down to this: “You’re either with Me or against Me.” Jesus is asking you whether you accept His authority as God and King of the world. If you do not accept that, than you are working with His enemies, whether you believe it or not. Jesus is not just another rabbi, prophet, religious leader, or moral teacher. He is not just a person who set a good example for others. He is the sign that the Kingdom of God has come upon earth. If you are not with Jesus then you are working against Him. You must make a decision about whose side you are on. If you are the side of Satan then you will be rewarded with an eternity of punishment in hell. If you are on the side of King Jesus, He will reward you with an eternity of bliss in heaven. You must make a choice. Whose side are you on?

——-

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! ——

David Guzik said, “Jesus looks at every life delivered from Satan’s domination and says, “I’m plundering the kingdom of Satan one life at a time.” There is nothing in our life that must stay under Satan’s domination. The One who binds the strong man and will plunder his goods is our risen Lord.”

Second, Jesus shows that the kingdom of God has come. Matthew 12:28-29 says, “But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you. Or else how can one enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.” Jesus goes on to state that it is not Satan attacking his own kingdom, but rather God’s kingdom attacking Satan’s kingdom. Jesus is demonstrating the power of God’s kingdom by performing these miraculous exorcisms. Jesus uses the illustration of a strong man and his house to represent the devil and the world. Imagine wanting to rob a house, but the man of the house is built like a linebacker and armed to the teeth. You couldn’t just walk into that man’s house and take his stuff without overpowering him and tying him up first. And the only way you can bind that strong man is if you are stronger than him. Satan is a strong, powerful being. He is described in the Bible in terms like a roaring lion or a dragon. But Jesus Christ is stronger. Adam Clarke said, “Men, through sin, are become the very house and dwelling place of Satan, having of their own accord surrendered themselves to this unjust possessor; for whoever gives up his soul to sin gives it up to the devil. It is Jesus, and Jesus alone, who can deliver from the power of this bondage. When Satan is cast out, Jesus purifies and dwells in the heart.” Jesus has the Spirit of God, and with His superior power, He overcame Satan and Satan’s servants. The casting out of demons by Jesus was a sign that the kingdom of God had come upon the miracle. The Messiah had been sent by God to cast down the devil’s works and the hold he had over men’s souls. This was a fulfilment of a prophecy reaching all the way back to the book of Genesis, where God stated that the seed of woman would bruise the serpent’s head. Now, with the coming of Jesus, the kingdom of God has been established in the hearts of those who accept Christ as Saviour. The gift of salvation provided through the blood of Jesus Christ has brought many souls out of slavery to Satan and sin to freedom in the kingdom of God. Jesus has bound the devil and those who were enslaved by the devil can now walk free. It is now up to you. Will you stay bound in the darkness of the devil’s house or will you accept the freedom offered by Christ?

——

Warren Wiersbe said, “Jesus pointed out that their statement was illogical and impractical. Why would Satan fight against himself? Jesus affirmed that Satan had a kingdom, for he is the god of this age. He also stated that Satan had a “house,” which seems to refer to the body of the man who was possessed. If Satan casts out his own demonic helpers, then he is opposing himself, dividing his kingdom, and destroying his house.”

In our last message we looked at the response to Jesus’ healing. We saw that while the common people asked among themselves if Jesus was the Messiah, the Pharisees accused Jesus of gaining His power through the devil.

Now, let’s look at how Jesus responded to the false accusations of the Pharisees.

First, Jesus shows the absurdity of the Pharisees accusations. Matthew 12:24-28 says, “But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand: And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand? And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.” Jesus showed the absurdity of the Pharisees accusations in two ways. The first way was by questioning how Satan could cast out himself. The devil is evil, but he is not so stupid as to actively work against his own goals. The Pharisee’s argument made no sense and Jesus quickly exposed how illogical it was. Ray Fowler said, “Basically, if Jesus is casting out demons by the power of Satan, then Satan is fighting against himself. But that doesn’t make any sense. It’s like a group of soldiers firing on each other instead of on the enemy. Or let’s say you are in the Super Bowl. You are running for the winning touchdown, you’ve got a clear field ahead of you, when suddenly your own teammates chase you down and tackle you. Or how about a band of bank robbers entering a bank, and the chief bad guy robs his partners instead of the teller? Well, none of that makes any sense. And that’s what Jesus is telling the Pharisees here. He is telling them, “What you are saying doesn’t make sense. How can Satan drive out Satan? A team has to work together. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand?” Jesus then shows the absurdity of the Pharisees argument in a second way by exposing their hypocrisy. Matthew 12:27 says, “And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.” The phrase “your children” does not mean the Pharisee’s literal children, but rather their disciples. There were apparently other Jewish religious exorcists who also had the power from God to cast out demons. So in accusing Jesus they were also accusing themselves of being in league with Satan. And Jesus held up the actions of their own people to judge them. There are only two supernatural powers in the world: that of God and that of devil. In proving that He was not of the devil, Jesus proved that He was of God. And if He is of God, then we must now decide whether we will take heed to the words of God and Jesus, or whether we will reject them for the devil.

David Garland said, “Humans do not bring in God’s reign, build God’s kingdom, hasten its final consummation, or hinder its advance. Jesus’ preaching announces that God is in action and that one’s ultimate well-being is tied to what God is doing, not what they are doing. They can only receive it and enter it or reject it and be swept away in judgment.”

Whenever conflict springs up over the will of God on earth, it is really just a manifestation of the ongoing conflict between Satan and Jesus. This spiritual conflict will continue until Jesus’ ultimate victory as foretold in Revelation. In this passage of Matthew we see an example of the conflict caused by people opposing God’s work. The Pharisees refused to admit that the power of Jesus came from God, so they accused Him of being empowered by Satan. Jesus told them that they committed an unforgivable sin.

First, let’s look at the response to Jesus’ healing. Matthew 12:22-24 says, “Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David? But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.” Our passage today begins with a demon-possessed man being brought to Jesus. We don’t know anything else about this man or who brought him here. Whatever his background, Jesus quickly healed him and dispatched the demon. There were two reactions from those gathered nearby: The people, the common folk if you will, were shocked at His power and asked among themselves if Jesus is the Son of David. The Son of David was a term used by the Israelites for the Messiah who had been predicted in the Old Testament. The Messiah was prophesied to work miracles, like healing the blind and mute, which Jesus had just done. So the people wondered if Jesus could be the Messiah. The Pharisees, on the other hand, had a very different negative reaction. They did not even consider that Jesus could be the Messiah. They instead attributed His power to Beelzebub. Beelzebub is a old name for Satan meaning “Lord of the Flies.” The name may be derived from Baal, the false god of the Old Testament that the Israelites often committed idolatry to. What are the Pharisees trying to do by claiming Jesus was empowered by Beelzebub? They are trying to discredit Him in the eyes of the people. They cannot deny Jesus’ supernatural power, but they do not want to acknowledge that He is from God. So they accuse Him of gaining his supernatural power from Satan.

TEXT: Matthew 12:22-37

By way of introduction, the Bible Knowledge Commentary says, “He gave a strong warning to those moving away from Him. Understandably some would not comprehend who Jesus is. A divine Person living among men would naturally not be appreciated fully. That was why allowances for such actions were made: Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven. But while the person of Jesus was not fully comprehended, the power evidenced through Him should never have been misunderstood, especially by religious leaders. The nation, because of its leaders, was on the brink of making a decision that would bring irreversible consequences. They were about to attribute incorrectly to Satan the power of the Holy Spirit exercised through Jesus and thus to commit blasphemy against the Spirit. This specific sin cannot be reproduced today, for it required Jesus’ presence on earth with His performing miracles through the Spirit’s power. If, however, the leaders, acting on behalf of the nation, concluded that Jesus was empowered by Satan, they would commit a sin that would never find national or individual forgiveness (in this Age or in the Age to come). The consequences would bring about God’s judgment on the nation and on any individual who persisted in that view. The contrasts Jesus made between the good tree and its fruit and the bad tree and its fruit demonstrated the choices. Jesus condemned the Pharisees as a brood of vipers who could never say anything good because their hearts were evil. People are responsible for all their actions and words, which will acquit or condemn them on the day of judgment.”

In our last message in this series, we began looking at how Jesus revealed the root cause of His conflict with the world and the Jewish leaders. Opposition against Jesus, from when He walked the earth to the present day, is driven by Satan.

John MacArthur said, “The kingdom of God is for the spiritually sick who want to be healed, the spiritually corrupt who want to be cleansed, the spiritually poor who want to be rich, the spiritually hungry who want to be fed, the spiritually dead who want to be made alive. It is for ungodly outcasts who long to become God’s own beloved children.”

In our last message in this series, we looked at how Jesus was the Son and Servant of God. Despite this, he was opposed by the Jewish religious leaders of His day. Today, we will look at how Jesus revealed the root cause of this conflict. Opposition against Jesus, from when He walked the earth to the present day, is driven by Satan.

By way of introduction, the Bible Knowledge Commentary says, “Though the text does not state who brought this demon-possessed man to Jesus they may refer to the Pharisees. Probably the Pharisees discovered this man and realized the difficult nature of his case. He was both blind and mute, so communication with him was almost impossible. The man could not see what someone might want him to do, and while he could hear instructions, he would not be able to respond. Jesus immediately healed him by removing the demon, and the man both spoke and saw. The people were astonished and asked, Could this be the Son of David? In other words, “Is not this the promised Messiah, David’s Descendant who has come to rule over us and bring healing to our nation?” While the people were asking this question, the Pharisees were concluding that Jesus’ power must be attributed to Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Knowing what the Pharisees were thinking, Jesus defended His authority. This was one of the few times He did so, but the issue was clear. Jesus gave three arguments to answer the claim that He was working by Satan’s power. First, He said if He were casting out a demon by Satan’s power, then Satan would be working against himself. Why would Satan let Jesus cast out a demon and free a man who was already under his control? To do so would divide Satan’s kingdom and bring it to destruction. Second, Jesus asked them about contemporary Jewish exorcists, those who were able to cast out demons by the power of God. The apostles had been given that authority and others were thought to possess such power. Jesus was saying in essence, “If you believe exorcists work by the power of God in casting out demons, why do you not think I have that same divine power?” Third, by driving out demons, He was proving He was greater than Satan. He was able to go into Satan’s realm (the strong man’s house), the demonic world, and come away with the spoils of victory. Since He could do this, He was able to institute the kingdom of God among them. If He were driving out demons by Satan’s power, He certainly could not be offering the people God’s kingdom. That would be contradictory. The fact that He was coming to establish the kingdom clearly showed that He worked by the power of the Spirit of God, not by Satan’s power. Jesus then invited the people to make a clear decision. They must either be with Him or against Him.”

Ernest W. Shurtleff wrote:

Lead on, O King eternal,
the day of march has come;
henceforth in fields of conquest
your tents will be our home.
Through days of preparation
your grace has made us strong;
and now, O King eternal,
we lift our battle song.

Lead on, O King eternal,
till sin’s fierce war shall cease,
and holiness shall whisper
the sweet amen of peace.
For not with swords’ loud clashing
or roll of stirring drums
with deeds of love and mercy
the heavenly kingdom comes.

Lead on, O King eternal;
we follow, not with fears,
for gladness breaks like morning
where’er your face appears.
Your cross is lifted o’er us,
we journey in its light;
the crown awaits the conquest;
lead on, O God of might.

Lead on, O King eternal,
the day of march has come;
henceforth in fields of conquest
your tents will be our home.
Through days of preparation
your grace has made us strong;
and now, O King eternal,
we lift our battle song.

Lead on, O King eternal,
till sin’s fierce war shall cease,
and holiness shall whisper
the sweet amen of peace.
For not with swords’ loud clashing
or roll of stirring drums
with deeds of love and mercy
the heavenly kingdom comes.

Lead on, O King eternal;
we follow, not with fears,
for gladness breaks like morning
where’er your face appears.
Your cross is lifted o’er us,
we journey in its light;
the crown awaits the conquest;
lead on, O God of might.

Amen.

TEXT: Matthew 12:15-21:

15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

——

John Piper said, “The success of Jesus’ struggle is that he will triumph over all the forces which bruise reeds and quench wicks. Therefore, no matter how much it costs to follow him in this life, we should set our hope only on him. Even though Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, the good news of his final victory over evil will reach to every nation; and there will be people from every tribe and tongue and nation who set their hope on Jesus Christ.”

In our last four messages in this series, we looked at how Jesus was the humble and meek son and servant of God. We looked at how Jesus was the prophesied son and servant of God. We looked at how Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit of God. We looked at how Jesus was the gentle and compassionate son and servant of God.

Fifth, look at the victoriousness of Jesus. Matthew 12:20-21 says, “A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.” In verse 18, we were told that Jesus “shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.” Now we are told that He will send judgment to victory. Jesus came to bring justice to the nations and He will be victorious in His mission. As the only begotten son of God and the anointed servant of God, He cannot fail. The Gentile nations will put their trust in Him. The time was coming when Jesus would no longer tell his disciples not to make His name known. Instead, He would tell them to proclaim His name and message throughout the earth as the Saviour of the earth.

John Gill said that “till he send forth judgment unto victory” means “till he sends forth the Gospel into their hearts, accompanied with his mighty power, in the light and comfort of it; which informs their judgments, enlightens their understandings, bows their wills, raises their affections, sanctifies their souls, works effectually in them, under the influence of his Spirit and grace, to the carrying on of the work of grace in them to the end; and making them victorious over all their enemies, and more than conquerors, through him that has loved them.”

Adam Clarke said, “By judgment means to understand the Gospel, and victory means its complete triumph over both Jewish opposition and Gentile impiety. He will continue by these mild and gentle means to work till the whole world is Christianized, and the universe filled with his glory. Jesus Christ is the sole hope and trust of mankind; to trust and hope in his name, Jesus, is to expect salvation and all things necessary from him alone, to despise, comparatively, all earthly promises, to esteem, love, and desire heavenly things only, and to bear with patience and tranquillity all the losses and evils of this life, upon the prospect and hope of that felicity which he has purchased for us.” Jesus not only brought salvation to the Jews, but to the Gentile nations. We can trust in His name because God became a man and came down to earth to die for our sins. He humbled Himself so that we might stand before the throne of God without fear. He was anointed so that He might fulfil the will of God. He was gentle and compassionate so as to make Himself a sacrifice and bring salvation to unworthy sinners. It is only in His name that we can trust to be saved.

J. Wilbur Chapman wrote:

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises
One day when sin was as black as could be
Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin
Dwelt among men, my example is He
Word became flesh and the light shined among us
His glory revealed

One day they led Him up Calvary’s mountain
One day they nailed Him to die on a tree
Suffering anguish, despised and rejected
Bearing our sins, my Redeemer is He
Hands that healed nations, stretched out on a tree
And took the nails for me

One day the grave could conceal Him no longer
One day the stone rolled away from the door
Then He arose, over death He had conquered
Now is ascended, my Lord evermore
Death could not hold Him, the grave could not keep Him
From rising again

One day the trumpet will sound for His coming
One day the skies with His glories will shine
Wonderful day, my Beloved One bringing
My Savior Jesus is mine

Living, He loved me
Dying, He saved me
Buried, He carried my sins far away
Rising, He justified freely forever
One day He’s coming
Oh glorious day, oh glorious day
Glorious day
Oh glorious day

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

——

Charles Spurgeon said, “Thou hast been broken and rendered useless by sin, thou hast fallen from thy steadfastness; thou art not fit to be a pillar in the house of thy God, but only to be thrown on the dunghill like a broken bulrush; yet Jesus, when men reject thee, will receive thee, and when thy conscience reprobates thee, his love will not discard thee. Be of good cheer. He who affords his direst foes a thousand opportunities to repent will not in his fierce anger cast out those who crave mercy at his hands.

In our last message in this series, we looked at how Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit and anointed by God in order to fulfil His task as the chosen Servant of God.

Fourth, look at the gentleness and compassion of Jesus. Matthew 12:19-20 says, “He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.” This part of our passage shows us the gentleness and compassion of Jesus in two ways. First, Jesus did not quarrel or cry out. This means that He did not get into strife with others in a manner that would have drawn undue attention. We already saw this in how Jesus withdrew when He found out that the pharisees were plotting to kill Him. This does not mean that Jesus kept complete silence. He preached the message and God and stood up and spoke out against evil. But He avoided unnecessary conflict until it served God’s purposes. Ray Fowler said, “Jesus cares for the helpless. Jesus cares for those the world can’t be bothered with or troubled over, those the world doesn’t pay any attention to. Jesus cares about all the hurting, all the failures, all the rejects, all the drop-outs, all the little people, all the weak links in the chain that everyone else sets aside. Jesus comes to all those who are bruised and battered by life. He comes to the spiritually broken. He comes to those so bruised by sin and all its effects that they are unable to stand up under it. He comes to all those whose flame is flickering, and he gives them hope. We are all bruised reeds and smoldering wicks. We have all been beaten and bruised and pushed back in so many ways in this life. We all know the heartsick of hope deferred and the heartbreak of hopes crushed. But Jesus cares for the helpless and hopeless. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. He is a gentle servant.” Puritan pastor Richard Sibbes wrote a book called The Bruised Reed that is based on Isaiah 42:3, the verse that Matthew quotes here about Jesus. In the book, Sibbes wrote, “Are you bruised? Be of good comfort, he calls you. Conceal not your wounds, open all before him and go to Christ. There is more mercy in him than sin in you.” We are all humans bruised and burnt by sin and the cares of this world. But we can find comfort in the gentle and compassionate Son and Servant of God, Jesus Christ. If you are hurting, come to Jesus, because He can heal you. He will lend His strength to those who are weary, His power to those who are weak, His joy to those who are sorrowful. Most importantly, He provides salvation to all who are dead in sin. Come to the son of God so that you can be saved.

Adam Clarke said, God required an acceptable and perfect service from man; but man, being sinful, could not perform it. Jesus, taking upon him the nature of man, fully performed the whole will of God, and communicates grace to all his followers, to enable them perfectly to love and worthily to magnify their Maker.”

In our last message in this series, we looked at how Jesus was the prophesied Son and Servant of God. He demonstrated this by fulfilling what was written by the prophet Isaiah..

Third, look at the anointing of Jesus. Matthew 12:18 says, “Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.” Matthew is still quoting from Isaiah 42, from a passage where God is speaking. Jesus came down to earth in obedience to God and did His Father’s will on earth. Jesus was chosen and loved by God, and God was pleased with Jesus’ conduct. We find these same words in Matthew 3:16-17, during the baptism of Jesus, and we will find them again in Matthew 17:5 during the transfiguration of Jesus. Not only was Jesus the chosen and beloved servant of God, He was anointed with the Holy Spirit of God for His task. At His baptism, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove and rested on Him. John MacArthur said, “This was a promise in that when the Messiah came, the Spirit would be upon Him. Now we know that that happened for certain in a unique way at His baptism, because it says the Spirit of God descended like a dove. It also says in Matthew 1:20 that He was conceived of the Holy Spirit. Now what does this mean? I mean, if He’s already God, and the Father and the Son and the Spirit are already one in Him, what does it mean to have this special putting of the Spirit on Him? There was not only the Spirit of God from the very conception to empower His humanness, but there was a special anointing at the baptism for His royal service. He was granted the Spirit. And so He functioned in the Father’s plan and by the Spirit’s power. Because as a total servant, He submits Himself to the Father on the one hand and to the Spirit on the other hand. And He does that not only for the sake of the function but for the sake of the example to us that it is. So the Beloved Servant is commissioned by the Spirit and communicating the message of God.” After the baptism, God anointed Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit and power. He was chosen by God, beloved by God, and pleasing to God. He was anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit in order to fulfil His task as the chosen Servant of God.
